Chitrakoot Waterfall: The Niagara Falls of India?

Chitrakoot Waterfall, Chhattisgarh

Chitrakoot Waterfall is the widest waterfall in India. Aka Niagara Falls of India.
Feel alive within its vicinity, around the natural musical show of the tumbling water against the rocks will take you to tranquility. Its misty adventurous boat ride will traverse you to a fairytale world.  Surrounded by lush green forest, preserved and protected.
During the monsoon season, the falls can spread out to around 300 meters (980 feet) in breadth, and their height is approximately 29 meters (95 feet).

This Indravati’s River natural waterfall which is also pronounced as Chitrakote & Chitrakot is situated about 39 kilometers west of Jagdalpur in the Bastar district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

Due to its horseshoe shape during the monsoon season just like Niagara Falls Shape, Chitrakoot Waterfall is known as “The Niagara Falls of India”.
Despite the fact that it is around one-third narrower than Niagara Falls, its scenic grandeur has been compared to being similarly spectacular.

So, are you ready to find yourself lost in this wonderland?
I say why Not?

What is the best time to visit Chitrakoot Fall?

The months of October and November offer the most incredible picturesque sights as the waterfall becomes white with a bluish-to-greenish hue i.e. without mud/brownish. The best part, boating activities also resume in October month. Never visit during summer.

How to reach Chitrakoot waterfalls?

First, you have to reach Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh. And from Jagdalpur,
Chitrakoot waterfall is just 50 Minutes drive away.
If you’re not traveling via your own private vehicle then you can catch buses from Jagdalpur Station.
There are three ways to get to Jagdalpur: via road, train, or air.
Roads provide excellent access to it. There are both private and public transportation options available to get there, including buses and taxis. The closest railway station is in the Bastar area, at Jagdalpur Railway Station.
Jagdalpur City has its own regional airport as well. You can get direct flights only from Raipur and Hyderabad for now.

Note: Not to be confused with Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh.

“I thought only humans could give us surprises.
But we were wrong…
It’s the “Nature”, they’re priceless!”

STORYLINE: Everything You Need To Know

Hey, have you ever dreamt of traveling to a place, resembling a fairy tale world which is dreamy and heavenly?
If it’s a big yes, then continue reading to get lost in this wonderland and visit here later in reality.

It was the month of November When I and a group of travel enthusiastic friends decided to explore the best places in Chhattisgarh.
After traveling to Kanger Valley National Park; Kotumsar caves (Kotumsar Caves: Scary Yet Exciting Unique Caves) and Tirathgarh Waterfall, we headed towards the Chitrakoot Waterfall.

From Jagdalpur Chitrakoot Waterfall is just 39 km away i.e. 50 Minutes drive.
But first, we had to check in at India’s first Sustainable Eco-Resort which offers the most breathtaking views of India’s Niagara Falls straight from each room. Such a unique stay in India!

To access the protected area, we first crossed the police checkpoint.
We started hearing the resonating sound of the waterfall, which was still a few meters away.
By this only one could imagine how enormous Chitrakoot waterfall would be.
Then we moved on to Dandami Luxury Resort, the Government-owned property promoting sustainability and Eco-Tourism.

Where environmental protection and tourism growth coexist.
Thereby setting a great example of sustainable Travel and tourism.

The most surprising part was the view from the rooms of the property.
As we stepped inside the eco-huts, everything was made up of wood, giving a northern vibe, high ceilings,
hanging chandeliers, yellow lights, and the finest part which will blow your mind and jaws wide open.
The sliding door opens out to a patio.
Giving a view of Chitrakoot waterfall and its roar.

Have you ever fantasized about waking up to a glimpse of India’s widest waterfall?
Yes! Only at Dandami Resort.
We enjoyed and relaxed during the sunset, played Ukulele on the patio, and explored the beautiful property.

The next morning, I started my day with Yoga Flow and got ready for the Eco-Trail to Chitrakoot Waterfalls.
The entrance of the trail was connected to the resort, which was created by Chhattisgarh Tourism to promote Eco-Tourism.
But before that, we had our breakfast at the resort’s restaurant.
After having our breakfast, we witnessed a tribal dance of Chhattisgarh on the resort premises.
It was a remarkable and sustainable way to involve the local communities in the tourism sector.

We then continued our trail to Chitrakoot Waterfall.
The distance of the trail from the resort to Chitrakoot waterfall was approx. 1 Km.
Not much long easy to hike.
The trail has beautiful natural and manmade planted flora, with large natural boulder rocks resembling caves-like structures and the Indravati river flows by your side.
In contrast, you can hear the increasing natural music of the waterfall as you walk closer to it.

On the way itself, we made one new friend.
Can you guess who?
If you have ever done any hikes or treks then you may guess it right.

I hope you guessed it right.
It’s a canine.
A dog, indeed. From the resort, where we started our trail he started following us. As if he chose us!
We named him “Shadow”. According to his black fur.
This has become quite common to everyone now where people have made one Dog as a friend while on the hikes and treks as a partner.
He followed us till the time we left that place.
As if he was guiding us or taking us to his favorite place i.e. Chitrakoot waterfall.

“Look around carefully, the true peace lies in these little things.
Which we didn’t even notice.
Why left ignored?
Value them.”

While we were getting closer to the waterfall, the musical sound of the Chitrakoot waterfall also increased.
As though we were entering a realm from a fairy tale.
Time travel to a fairy tale world.
Which failed to take our eyes away from the Chitrakoot waterfall.

You can have a view from the top, or secondly from the downhill- via boats.
Of course, after having a top view, anyone would love to have a closer look at the waterfall via boat.
But if you’re aquaphobic, then you might get skeptical about it then that’s quite a different thing.

After reaching the boating point,
I found myself completely lost in that panoramic vista which took me to another dimension.
I have never been to or witnessed such an incredible waterfall in my life.

Shadow(Dog) took a bath in the flowing water of the Indravati River which was coming from the Chitrakoot waterfall
as if I was taking his photoshoot. Chitrakoot waterfall made him reveal his grace. Funny!

We were still a few meters away from the closest view of the waterfall, we decided to take a boat.
We had 2 options:
Either choose a private boat or a group boat.
As Chhattisgarh Tourism is promoting Sustainable Tourism, there were no boats that were powered by fossil fuels,
all of their boats were run entirely by human labor.
In this way involving locals and giving employment to them.

We preferred a private boat.
In the queue, we met a few foreigners. Had a brief chit-chat with them since they were uncertain and skeptical about the safety of the boat. Then I assured and guided them about safety, making sure they knew they would be wearing life jackets and that the boat drivers were trained and experienced. By this, they were relieved.
At that moment I realized the importance of Chitrakoot Waterfall.
It is the treasure and natural wonder of India that people are traveling from abroad to see this epic beauty.

Well, at the inception I was also a bit scared to board the boat and get a close-up glimpse of the cascade.
As I’m aquaphobic, I saw people returning back all wet from that misty adventure!
We were already experiencing the misty air coming from the waterfall from a few meters away.
Now you can envision what would happen if we get closer to Chitrakoot Waterfall.

A Glimpse From The Dandami Resort

Finally, our turn came to have a boat ride,
which was about 10-15 Minutes long, and this 10 – 15 Minutes ride gave me the
best moment of the year in Nature.
Even my words can’t describe the whole sensation in detail. The jaw-dropping moment while I kept staring as if it was real or fiction. I thought of pinching myself to get me out of this fantasy.

However, the main question. How can we forget this?
Was it really like Niagara Falls?
Yes! A big Yes! I too never expected this.
Though I have never been to Niagara Falls; I’ve seen videos and pictures of it.
It felt exactly like Niagara Falls but in our desi version.

As we approached closer to the waterfall, I felt tiny as if I was entering into a gateway of a fairy tale world. (Only the Prince was missing. Lol!)
Full-volume musical show of the waterfall, with misty and foggy adventures of the Chitrakoot waterfall showered upon us till we got thoroughly wet.
Those misty sprinkles of the waterfall with the sun rays reflecting and refracting through the mist gifted us live magical rainbow formations in front of the waterfall. Which truly won our hearts, and felt alive.

Truly a wonderland, stowed in our hearts, now it will be carried on to YOU.
It’s your turn to visit this enchanted paradise, Niagara Falls of India.

Hearts filled with magical wonderland, we returned back to reality.
Checked out at Dandami Resort, and said goodbye to our new companion Shadow.
He followed us until we departed, running behind our car as if he were asking us to come back sooner or maybe to not leave him.
A bit emotional moment, but truly memorable.
Gonna visit here again, but this time with my fam.
I hope to meet “Shadow’ again.❤
